Recently, we’ve received a significant influx of calls from customers experiencing blocked drains, these urgent requests often require immediate assistance as water backs up posing a significant threat of damage to your bathroom, kitchen or laundry.

Check out our latest stories and posts on our instagram page for some extra photos we’ve posted about the amazing causes of blocked drains. We’re always surprised to find what can make it’s way down a drain.

In this article we’ll cover three examples from our last few weeks emergency plumbing in Melbourne. We’ll also cover a couple of tools and ideas we use to unblock drains when an emergency strikes. Looking at how we use Water Jets and inspection cameras (CCTV). We delve into how Melbourne Plumbing Co. leverages these tools to provide quick, efficient, and safe solutions for blocked drains, ensuring your plumbing system remains in optimal condition.

Kitchen Sink Blockage

It seems like our client’s kitchen sink and dishwasher decided to throw their own little gathering – a clog party, to be precise! In this emergency plumbing situation in Melbourne, our reliable air snake and drain snake came to the rescue, allowing us to play detective and unearth the root of the problem: a tangled mass of soap and dirt, almost like a misguided treasure hunt. We transformed into plumbing superheroes, venturing into the external drain inspection point to save their appliances from this chaotic tangle. It’s surprising how a kitchen can become the scene of such a disorderly event. But worry not, the blockage has been conquered, and their sink and dishwasher have been restored to their gleaming, soap-free condition.

Toilet Blockage

As it happens, the client’s toilet was the object of an unexpected affection – a cunning root stirring up trouble! Our dependable CCTV camera allowed us to catch the source of the issue in the act (or, more accurately, green-rooted?). It appears our toilet had a not-so-hidden admirer after all! Sometimes we call these CCTV cameras inspection cameras as you’ll see from our solution to clean drains write up below.

Bathroom Sink Drains

Melbourne Plumbing Co specialises in handling all kinds of plumbing issues. This one is a bathroom drain that’s been blocked up over the years.

Understanding the challenges of a blocked drain

From accumulated hair and soap scum in bathroom sinks to food particles and grease in kitchen drains, the causes are numerous. These blockages can lead to slow water drainage, unpleasant odors, and in severe cases, backing up of sewage, which poses health risks and potential property damage.

Water Jetter and Inspection Camera

If you’ve got these tools at your disposal great. But if you don’t and you just need the problem to go away that’s when we’d recommend a qualified emergency plumber.

We’ll provide four key outcomes for you:

These will give you the confidence that the problem is resolved and you don’t need to continue to monitor and use your own time to try to figure out what’s going wrong. Worst still the longer you leave a problem the bigger the risk becomes of damage.

This is a fairly comprehensive guide and to be used as help in any emergency plumbing situation. Always err on the side of caution whenever doing any DIY plumbing, there’s something that can be said for experienced and licensing especially when it comes to insurance and even your own safety.

Turn your water off at the main. In Melbourne this is often this is next to your meter

Turn off your electricity if there’s an electrical hazard

Understanding the immediate actions to take in the wake of a plumbing emergency is vital for two primary reasons: minimising property damage and ensuring the safety of all occupants. The moment a pipe bursts, water can quickly spread, seeping into floors, walls, and furnishings, leading to structural damage and potentially hazardous mould growth. By knowing how to promptly shut off the water supply and drain the remaining water from the pipes, you can significantly reduce the extent of the damage. Additionally, taking swift measures to turn off electricity in affected areas can prevent electrical hazards, protecting everyone in the vicinity. This knowledge not only saves valuable time and reduces repair costs but also provides peace of mind during what can be a stressful emergency situation, ensuring that you and your property are safeguarded against the immediate dangers of a burst pipe.

Understanding the Signs of a Burst Pipe

Leaking and discolouration is a prime sign of water damage.
Leaking suspended ceiling

Recognising the common indicators of a burst pipe is crucial for early intervention and can help prevent extensive damage to your property. Melbourne Plumbing Co highlights these signs include:

By staying alert to these common indicators, homeowners can swiftly identify a burst pipe, allowing for quicker response times to fix the issue and minimise damage and potential hazards.

Assessing the Water Damage

We all hate to figure out how much things are going to cost us as a result of water damage but here’s some helpful tips that may help ease the pain.

Emergency Inspection for Water Damage: In the event of a plumbing emergency, it’s crucial to promptly assess the extent of water damage and pinpoint the exact location of the burst pipe. Melbourne residents facing such crises can benefit from a thorough inspection, which helps in formulating an effective response strategy. Identifying the source of the leak not only aids in immediate remediation but also in preventing further damage to the property. Melbourne Plumbing Co specialises in quickly addressing these emergencies, ensuring that the impact on your home is minimised. If you need help with this let us know, we’re happy to help.

Documenting Damage for Insurance Claims: Super important, during a plumbing emergency, taking detailed photos of the affected areas is a vital step for homeowners. These images serve as concrete evidence of the damage for insurance claims, facilitating a smoother reimbursement process. Melbourne residents should document every aspect of the water damage and the burst pipe’s location, capturing the extent of the flooding and any property damage. This documentation is essential when liaising with insurance companies, and Melbourne Plumbing Co can provide expert advice on how to effectively present your claim.

Temporary Plumbing Fixes

This never sounds good when it comes to water and it’s really not. We recognise you’re not an experienced licensed plumber like Melbourne Pluming Co therefore a temporary fix would only be until we arrive on site. We would avoid a temporary fix wherever possible but sometimes it can help get you through from Sunday to Monday while keeping a close eye on it.

Temporary Plumbing Fixes such as fans
This is the sewage water damage recovery process in a residential home. The flooring is ripped off, and the rooms are sprayed with biowash. Industrial fans and dehumidifiers is placed in the room for the drying and restoration process. The process will last 3 days.

These are some of our helpful ideas, we take no responsibility here, use them at your own risk we recommend getting us out on site asap.

  1. Using Pipe Sealant: For small leaks, applying a pipe sealant can be a quick and effective temporary solution. Pipe sealants are available in most hardware stores and can be applied directly to the leaking area to seal it off temporarily. Ensure the pipe is dry before application and follow the product instructions for the best results. This method is particularly useful for minor leaks in accessible pipes.
  2. Applying Pipe Clamps: Pipe clamps are designed to provide a tight seal around a pipe, making them an excellent option for temporarily managing leaks. They can be especially effective for larger cracks or splits in pipes. To use a pipe clamp, simply place it around the damaged section of the pipe and tighten it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This will help contain the leak until a Melbourne plumbing professional can make a permanent repair.
  3. Epoxy Putty: Epoxy putty is another valuable tool for emergency plumbing repairs. It can be molded to fit the shape of the leak and hardens to create a strong seal. Before applying, shut off the water supply and clean the area around the leak. Knead the putty until it’s mixed and then apply it over the leak. Allow it to cure as per the product’s instructions.
  4. Rubber Pipe Connectors: For situations where the pipe has a significant break or burst, a rubber pipe connector can be used to bridge the gap temporarily. This method involves cutting out the damaged section of the pipe and using the connector to join the two ends. While this is more complex than other temporary fixes, it can be a lifesaver in preventing extensive water damage until the Melbourne Plumbing Co can address the issue.
  5. Waterproof Tape: Waterproof tape can be wrapped around the pipe over the leak as a temporary measure. While not as durable as other methods, it can provide a quick fix that holds back the water temporarily. Ensure the pipe is dry and clean before applying the tape for the best adherence.

Remember, and we cannot stress enough while these temporary fixes can help manage a plumbing emergency, they are not long-term solutions. It’s essential to contact Melbourne Plumbing Co or another professional plumbing service in Melbourne as soon as possible to properly repair the damage and prevent future leaks.

Here’s why professional intervention is vital and what to consider when choosing a reliable plumbing service:

Importance of Professional Plumbing Services

Choosing a Reliable Plumbing Service

When selecting a plumbing service, consider these key factors to ensure you’re getting reliable, high-quality service:

By prioritising these factors, you can find a plumbing service that not only addresses your immediate needs but also ensures the long-term integrity of your plumbing system. Melbourne Plumbing Co, with its licensed professionals, extensive experience, and round-the-clock availability, exemplifies the qualities to look for in a trusted plumbing service provider, ensuring your plumbing emergencies are resolved with expertise and efficiency.

Are your plumbing systems in top working order commercial or residential?

In Melbourne, the availability of on-call commercial or residential plumbing services are a critical aspect of maintaining the functionality and efficiency of any property, be it a restaurant, office building, retail store or your house. Ensuring that plumbing systems are in top working condition is not just a legal requirement but also reflects the quality of the establishment. You can do preventative maintenance but with plumbing it can be either it’s working or it’s leaking. When it’s leaking it tends to be an emergency.

While it’s a given your plumbing needs to be in good condition let’s go through four reasons why you may want to bump this up the priority list:

1. Frequent use and misuse of plumbing systems

Commercial plumbing systems in Melbourne undergo more frequent use and, unfortunately, often face misuse. This increased usage puts them at a higher risk of damage and malfunction. Having access to on-call emergency plumbing services is therefore essential to address any unforeseen issues promptly and efficiently. Everyone knows that in Melbourne you can have more than one season in one day and it usually results in some very heavy rain.

2. Plumbing emergencies can lead to closures

While regular maintenance and inspections can prevent many plumbing issues, unexpected problems like leaks, clogs, or system failures can still occur. These emergencies can lead to significant water damage and may even require temporary closure for repairs. Quick access to emergency plumbing services in Melbourne is crucial to minimise downtime and repair costs. If you see a leak or feel moisture where it shouldn’t be then get it fixed before it turns into something that could cost you more money.

3. Landlord Melbourne plumbing support

For businesses in Melbourne, such as restaurants or apartment complexes, functional plumbing is vital for customer satisfaction. Issues like lack of hot water or non-functioning toilets can lead to customer dissatisfaction. On-call plumbing services ensure that any problems are addressed swiftly, maintaining a positive experience for clients and tenants.

4. A blocked drain or complex plumbing problem

Melbourne Plumbing Co. understands the importance of keeping commercial facilities operational. Whether it’s a simple issue like a clogged drain or a more complex problem like water heater failure, their experienced plumbers are equipped to provide quick and effective solutions. With 24/7 availability, they guarantee prompt service whenever it’s needed.

5. Having a reliable local plumber who you can call and will satisfy landlords and tenants

Chris and the team at MPC offer on-call commercial plumbing services are indispensable for businesses in Melbourne. They not only ensure the smooth operation of plumbing systems but also contribute to the overall satisfaction of customers and tenants. Melbourne Plumbing Co. is dedicated to providing prompt, professional, and efficient services to handle any plumbing emergency or routine maintenance needs.

What you should look for before your water leak becomes an emergency

Given the above it’s also worth pointing out what to look for so we’ve put together a comprehensive list of things that could spell disaster if you’re not aware.

Identifying potential plumbing issues before they escalate into emergencies can save you time, money, and inconvenience. Hereโ€™s a list of things to look for to prevent plumbing problems from becoming emergencies, especially relevant for residents and businesses in Melbourne:

1. Slow Drains: If water is draining slowly from your sinks, showers, or bathtubs, it could indicate a blockage forming in your pipes. Addressing slow drains early can prevent complete blockages or backflows.

2. Gurgling Sounds: Unusual noises coming from your drains or toilets, such as gurgling or bubbling sounds, can indicate a blockage in the vent pipe or sewer line. These sounds often precede more serious plumbing issues.

3. Water Pressure Changes: A sudden drop in water pressure throughout your home or in specific fixtures could signal a leak in your system or an issue with the municipal water supply. Conversely, high water pressure can stress your plumbing system and lead to leaks.

4. Water Stains or Damaged Walls: Water stains on ceilings or walls, peeling paint, or warped materials can indicate hidden leaks. Addressing these signs early can prevent mold growth and structural damage.

5. Musty Smells: Persistent musty or moldy odors, especially under sinks, in bathrooms, or in basements, can indicate hidden leaks and moisture problems. Mold can pose health risks and damage building materials.

6. Visible Leaks: Regularly inspect exposed pipes, under sinks, and around appliances for signs of leaks, such as water droplets, puddles, or corrosion. Even small leaks can lead to larger problems if not repaired.

7. Running Toilets: Toilets that run continuously can waste a significant amount of water and indicate an internal leak or a problem with the toilet’s mechanism.

8. Sputtering Faucets: When turning on a faucet, if you notice sputtering or air bubbles, it could indicate air in your pipes, which may be caused by a leak in your system.

9. High Water Bills: An unexplained increase in your water bill could be a sign of a leak somewhere in your plumbing system. Compare your bills over time to spot any significant changes.

10. Rust-Colored Water: If you notice rust-colored water coming from your taps, it could indicate corrosion in your pipes, which may lead to leaks or water quality issues.

By keeping an eye out for these signs and addressing them promptly, you can often prevent minor issues from becoming major plumbing emergencies. Regular maintenance and inspections by a professional plumber can also help identify and resolve potential problems before they escalate. For residents and businesses in Melbourne, ensuring your plumbing system is in good condition is key to avoiding disruptions and costly repairs.

If in doubt or things have got out of hand with your small plumbing problem which has just become an emergency give your local plumber a call. We’re more than happy to help and on call 24/7.
